This is the time of year when people decide on or announce what their New Year’s Resolutions will be. You may already have a few in mind but right now I’d like to suggest a few that center on your food- and no, none of these resolutions are “lose weight”.
As you decide what will do next year (even if you fall short) remember you can resolve to take action anytime of the year and setting specific goals with deadlines will help you get where you want to go. 2012 won’t be better for you than 2011 was just cause you want it to be. You have to plan and act on that plan if you want to make a difference. That said, here are my suggestions for what you can set as goals or resolve to do in 2012 with a little help from the Simpsons. Last week Congress decided that pizza is a vegetable. So in “Exhibit C” where Jay Electronica says “When I was sleepin on the train/ sleepin on Meserole Ave out in the rain/ without even a single slice of pizza to my name/ too proud to beg for change, mastering the pain” had that happened on Wednesday instead Jay Electronica could have just grown his pizza on a tree instead. I’m sure many of us have figured out eating fast food can make you sick, but here’s a little more info on how it makes you sick.
This new study may have you taking a pass on that 2 slices and a large soda for $3 deal.
A recent study in found 48% of the fountain sodas in fast food restaurants contain coliform bacteria. These bacterium are found in feces. That’s right poo.
According to the abstract of the scientists’ report on sciencedirect.comyou can’t blame the type of soda. No difference was found in the amount of microbes between different types of sodas.
You also can’t blame the fast food workers, sort of. No statistical difference in the amount of microbes found between self-service and personnel-dispensed soda fountains.

Ice from these fountain soda machines was also tested and none of the ice samples exceeded U.S. drinking water standards.
Other microbes found were Staphylococcus, E. Coli and Candida among others.
This study suggests these soda fountains a home to small communities of bacteria and other microorganisms. Due to this public health risk stronger regulations are needed to make sure these machines are as hygienic as possible.
