Didn't he look like he needed a break?

Didn't he look like he needed a break?

Harlem rapper Charles Hamilton has resurfaced after being dropped from his label last year and of course after several public embarrassments and fails.

He recently released what was called on one blog “a rather lengthy letter” to everyone on the internet. Yes, it is lengthy. Yes, it is very, very emo. [Read the letter HERE]

But I can respect a rapper or any entertainer who says look, in a lot of ways I’m overexposed. In a lot of ways that’s my fault. I can’t stop f-ing up, especially in public so I will take several mental health days and stop this painful spectacle from (more…)

What is the #1 cause of holiday stress? The answer is money or lack or money really. According to FranklinCovey Products’s fifth annual holiday stress survey of 1,000 U.S. adults.

Did you see that one coming? Despite the current state of the economy 61% believe they spend too much during the holidays.

Who is the most stressed during the holidays? According to a 2006 national survey conducted by Mental Health America people of color are the most stressed out during the holidays. Makes sense if the number one stressor is lack of money and 3 years ago things were considerably better for a lot of people .

That study found parents are more stressed than other groups and females are more stressed than males about finances.

Other top holiday stressors include memories of deceased loved ones, having to much to do, crowded stores and malls, physical demands and loneliness.

In general according to many studies time after time the United States is ranked as one of the most unhappy countries in the world.

Gangstarr feat. G-Dep- “The Mall”

Shopping at the mall can be really stressful. When I play this song in my ipod at the mall I feel comfortable pushing people out of my way to get where I’m going. These cats sound like they like shopping way more than I do. They even shouted out Green Acres, a lovely mall in Long Island, New York that I have no business going anywhere near this Christmas.

Thanksgiving tends to set off the holiday season and also the suicide season. This may be due to the feelings the holidays stir up with all the American unhappiness in the backdrop and the fewer hours of sunlight, which can lead to depression. (more…)

I can't help but to wonder how much The Soprano's encouraged people to go to therapy.

I can't help but to wonder how much The Soprano's encouraged people to go to therapy.

On college campuses across the nation there is a rise in the number of students seeking psychiatric help. National surveys of campus therapists show the numbers are higher than ever before.

The problems range form clinical depression to anxiety to eating disorders. Campus therapists are claiming a rise in the number of students seeking psychiatric help and an increase in the severity of the problems that need to be addressed.

Experts say today’s teens aren’t more disturbed than previous generations, but the screening processes and earlier diagnosis of mental health issues are likely to be the cause for the surge.

Big Boi feat. George Clinton & Too $hort- “For Your Sorrows”

Sure, this song isn’t really about sympathy for your sorrows, but aside from the haughty hook courtesy of George Clinton, Big Boi expresses his concerns for young folks. He even quotes some dubious statistics though he still makes the grade here. This is one of my favorites for this year.

chris-rock-good-hair

Official description: When Chris Rock’s daughter, Lola, came up to him crying and asked, “Daddy, how come I don’t have good hair?” the bewildered comic committed himself to search the ends of the earth and the depths of black culture to find out who had put that question into his little girl’s head!…

It’s true ideas about “good” and “bad” hair are still alive and well among Black folk. These days the konk is still much celebrated. A Black icon like Beyonce comes off as looking “fierce” for scalping a Scandinavian woman and putting on her head in every video since “Me, Myself and I” while Cynthia McKinney’s natural do makes people think she’s “wild”. Hey, maybe Beyonce did scalp a Scandinavian woman and maybe Cynthia McKinney is wild but are burns on your scalp from relaxers worth it? I just think these questions should be asked and these topics examined. Ultimately I think it can become a mental and physical health issue.

By the way Lola looks way too young to be getting a relaxer, but that’s just me.

Here’s the trailer for “Good Hair”, the Recipient of A Special Jury Prize: U.S. Documentary. In theaters this October.

UPDATE: Roxanne Shante’s claims have been proven false by slate.com

New York Daily News recently featured an article on how Queensbridge rapper Roxanne Shante became Roxanne Shante Ph.D. At the age of 14 the rap icon was on top of the world with “Roxanne’s Revenge,” a response record to UTFO’s hit “Roxanne, Roxanne.” By her second album the pioneer learned industry rule #4080 firsthand when her record company ripped her off.

At 19 she was a teen mother still living in Queensbridge Houses when she decided to pursue a clause in her recording contract. That clause stated Warner Music would fund her education for life.

Edo G Featuring Pete Rock- “School ‘Em”

I like Roxanne Shante’s attitude toward education and her each one teach one type posture. Mental health is an issue in the Black community as it is in any community though I think we are reluctant to address it as though seeking mental health is a luxury we can’t afford. I appreciate that she takes the time to counsel young women in the industry.

According to nydailynews.com: “She eventually cashed in, earning a Ph.D. in psychology from Cornell to the tune of $217,000 (more…)
