Long live native seeds”

Down with Monsanto. Down with GMO and hybrid seeds.”

Those were the chants of the peasants who protested against genetically modified seed “donator” Monsanto. Their one harvest seeds would spell disaster for the still ailing nation, plunging the farmers into a kind of “green slavery” and destroying the nations ability to feed itself. On June 4th, World Environment Day, Haitian farmers, national and international peasant groups came together to burn the toxic donation and voice their opposition to the Haitian president, Rene Preval. Above is a pic from a racist cotton ad campaign you can read about at contexts.org

Recently non-profit Organic Exchange released a list of top organic cotton buyers. Nike, Walmart and European clothing retailer H&M topped the list and which I wrote about HERE.

I was surprised by European ultra trendy retailer H&M was embroiled in a green scandal earlier this year, where they were said to have been committing organic cotton fraud. They sold clothes labeled as “certified-organic cotton” when it was actually genetically modified cotton from India.

Farmers in Haiti are set to burn genetically modified seeds donated by herbicide manufacturer Monsanto so it’s understood globally that genetically modified crops are bad news.

But still some may ask why would anybody want to buy organic cotton? (more…)

It is a scandal that the G8 are trying to quietly drop the promise they made to the world when millions campaigned to make poverty history.

The UK government should do all it can to stop this betrayal of the world’s poor at the Canadian G8.” ~Max Lawson, policy adviser for Oxfam, guardian.co.uk

The G8 will gather in Canada this month for the Muskoka summit where Aid to Africa has not been mentioned in a leaked draft communique for the meeting.

At 2005 Gleneagles summit the world’s most industrialized nations committed to provide increase aid to developing countries by around $50 billion a year by 2010. An extra $25 billion in financial assistance was allotted to Africa a year. (more…)

On June 4th Haitian farmers will burn genetically modified seeds donated by Monsanto. Find out why in Part 1 of this piece HERE.

According to truthout.org [4] hybrid corn seeds have been donated by Monsanto to Haiti that were treated with the fungicide Maxim XO and the calypso tomato seeds were treated with Thiram, a chemical so highly toxic agricultural workers must wear protective clothing when handling plants treated with it. On June 4th Haitian farmers will burn seeds as an act of protest in response to what one peasant farmer calls “a new earthquake”. Since the devastating 7.0 earthquake hit Haiti in mid January the country has been in even more need than the poverty stricken nation usually is. A company named Monsanto will be donating 60,000 seed sacks (475 tons) of hybrid corn seeds and vegetable seeds. [1]

Their website states “Monsanto is an agricultural company” but that’s not exactly the whole truth. They produce what they call “in-the-seed trait technologies”. Haitian farmers call Monsanto’s products genetically modified seeds and on June 4th, World Environment Day, these “beggars” will show themselves to be choosers when they set fire to the donated seeds.
