Black people

Samuel U. Rodgers Health Center in Kansas City Missouri has launched a campaign to get local uninsured or underinsured African-American young adults who don’t see a doctor regularly to see a doctor. Their “Urban Health Relief Plan” is aimed at getting young Black people in for check ups, follow ups and establishing a place to go to for routine health care.

Teens and 20-somethings aren’t known for caring about their health though many of us have health issues. Even if you’re young and in good health you don’t have to be Drake (pictured above) to take a hilarious yet nasty fall. The campaign utilizes Twitter, Facebook and text messaging to get the young, broke and fabulous involved and enrolled. Because they were able to get a grant from the state of Missouri not only will this program pay for transportation for those living in a 8 mile radius and there are no co-payments. (more…)

Pulitzer Prize winning reporter and former New York Newsday Editor Les Payne recently had a nasty fall…and didn’t go to the doctor. He’s a man of a certain age so I was concerned. He explained some of his initial thoughts after the incident:

‘I got this;’ I muttered, faithful to race and gender.

What’s the fun of being a black man if you can’t wax stupid about your health issues?

The best advice I ever ignored as an editor came from Derrick Jackson, a vegan reporter who runs marathons.

‘We black men,’ he cautioned, ‘have got to start taking better care of ourselves.’

Sure.”

He had to have his quadriceps tendon re-tied my with a string threaded through a hole drilled in the bone. And the pain? The trauma was compared by his surgeon “to a hand grenade exploding inside the muscle and tendon.”

And he didn’t want to go to the doctor! You guys is it really that serious? (more…)

Disclaimer: This post is not intended to suggest Roberta Tubbs of The Cleveland Show has herpes. She’s a lovely young lady that’s not real.

A recent study done by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows herpes rates remain high in U.S. So high every 1 in 6 Americans between the ages of 14 and 49 have genital herpes. It is the most popular sexually transmitted disease.

Black women had the highest rate of infection with 48%.

So half of all American Black women have herpes? I can’t even wrap my head around that. This is such bad PR for us ladies. I’m inclined to believe these numbers are off. They were wrong on swine flu. (more…)

In many arguments with friends I’ve been told as far as being “green” is concerned Black people don’t care about dolphins or polar bears. Black people care about people, particularly our own survival. And that’s understandable as there is much to be concerned with in our community, however I think “green” must include people and ultimately it is the survival of living things on this planet we all need to be concerned with.

So here’s a story about people and it’s completely dolphin and polar bear free.

Wu Liang Ye is a restaurant franchise owned by the Chinese government and established in New York City in 1993.

Workers are alleging the restaurant paid them “$1.10 an hour and later retaliated against staffers who sued” according to nydailynews.com.

“A suit filed in April 2008 said that Wu Liang Ye locations on Lexington Ave. and E. 86th St. paid workers just over $1 an hour, stole 10% of their credit card tips and failed to pay overtime.”

Immortal Technique- “Beef and Broccoli”

Anyone who knows me knows I prefer chicken and broccoli. I’ll eat chicken, rice and broccoli from any country too cause I’m worldly like that. Immortal Technique likes beef and broccoli though so all you vegans and vegetarians mind your goddamn business. Fa real I cosign everything he says here!

“Of the 25 workers named in the suit, 23 have been fired and some were assaulted and threatened, organizers said. (more…)
