Pharrell Williams is most well-known for his trademark production style but in his hometown of Virginia Beach, VA he is also known for his work as a philanthropist. Williams has funded a $35 million, 30,000 square foot youth center and commissioned Chad Oppenheim, of Oppenheim Architecture + Design to design it. Blending a futuristic design and tree house aesthetic, The Pharrell Williams Resource Center is slated for completion by 2013.
In a 2008 press release Pharrell credits his inspiration for creating the center to an educator who “gave him the confidence to pursue his talents.” Although the most costly, this isn’t the first time Pharrell has given back to his hometown. He’s taken in part in a number of various community activities from helping kids ascertain school supplies to ensuring there’s a turkey on the table for Thanksgiving.
Needless to say, Pharrell’s involvement in his community is admirable and something we can all applaud. For more information you can read Suzanne Labarre’s article ”Not A Joke: Pharrell Builds A Stunning $35 Million After School Space For Kids”
