“I’m addicted to food; I love food,” said Fat Joe, whose real name is Joe Cartagena. “It’s like a crack addict – he hits rock bottom and he says, ‘All right, forget it. I’m not going to get high anymore.'” -Fat Joe
Fat Joe recently dropped 88lbs and revealed his new physique in his latest video “Drop A Body”. Joe, who once topped the scales at 425 lbs, is now around 265 lbs. All this weight loss has folks searching for a new nickname for Joe like “Skinny Joe” and “Joey Flaco” (Spanish for “thin”). As far as a potential name change is concerned Joe says, “They’re all trying to alter my name, but I can’t see myself as anything else. I think I gotta ask Diddy what my new name is.”
Fat Joe has dropped a lot of weight in the past though he gained it back because he said he “wasn’t focused”. So what got him to trade in the half-chickens and pasta plates for six small daily meals of fruit, veggies, whole grains and lean meats?
“I can’t leave my daughter behind,” Joe said. “I want to be here for her; I don’t want to die on her.”
Joe says he lost seven friends in their 30s to heart attacks last year. In 2002 he also lost friend and co-collaborator, rapper Big Pun, who died from a heart attack due to his massive weight.
Joe also says “I was always LL Cool J in a fat guy’s body.” Embracing his inner LL Cool J, Joe started doing two-hour cardio and weight-lifting sweat sessions with a trainer.
