In an effort to cut power consumption Sony Corp. will adopt daylight savings time this summer. Power generation is expected to fall short in Tokyo, where Sony is based, due to the Fukushima nuclear accident. They are also negotiating with their trade unions to move up working hours to cover a time zone at its headquarters and 8 other offices in the area covered by Tepco according to company officials.

“Daylight Saving Time ‘makes’ the sun ‘set’ one hour later and therefore reduces the period between sunset and bedtime by one hour. This means that less electricity would be used for lighting and appliances late in the day. We may use a bit more electricity in the morning because it is darker when we rise, but that is usually offset by the energy savings in the evening.” -energy.ca.gov
