VIDEO: New Book Tells ‘The History of American Graffiti’


I can never forget the graffiti I saw as a kid growing up in New York City. And why shouldn’t I? It was incredible. It was public art and it was a part of my environment. The History of American Graffiti
was written by Roger Gastman and Caleb Neelon attempts to offer a thorough and comprehensive history of this great American art form. Oh yes, that’s how it’s discussed in the book as well as in this PBS interview with the authors.

Graffiti has been around for centuries but as the title suggests the scope is narrowed down to graffiti in the US. In the video the authors discuss graffiti that predates it’s more current incarnation as an element of Hip Hop, delving into graffiti during The Great Depression, among other eras.
