New York City is no stranger to Target of Kmart but when it comes to Walmart there’s a controversy. Many New Yorkers think Walmart is bad for the city, so bad they started a website about it. Here’s why.

The big box retailer has long had a reputation for low wages, setting off deadly mob frenzies at Christmas, poor health coverage, discriminatory management practices and driving the prices of products ever downward, which seems great if you’re a consumer, not so great if you’re a retailer or a worker for one of those retailers.

The reasons sited for banning Walmart are now are further punctuated by a study issued by the Public Advocate’s office. The study found:

When Walmart enters a community, it kills 3 local retail jobs for every 2 poverty-wage job it ‘creates.’”

They also claim Walmart puts a pox on local retailers and cheats on its taxes. In addition to those issues being extreme threats to the city’s economy during a nationwide economic downturn, Walmart Free NYC, coalition of concerned workers and residents, small business owners, community leaders, clergy and elected officials, wants to preserve what’s unique about this city from the rest of the country.

According to walmartfreenyc.tcbinc.com:

When a Walmart opened in Chicago, 25% of businesses surveyed within four miles closed. We must prevent this from happening in our communities, which are devastated by high unemployment.

We have a rare opportunity to stop NYC from turning into every other city in America, Walmerica, the one stop shopping “paradise” that has no regard for the communities they inhabit.

Sign the petition to keep Walmart out of NYC

Much of the city seems against it, with high turnout for anti Walmart protestors at the Walmart Free NYC rally, but our billionaire mayor is all to excited to have Walmart in Brooklyn, NY.
