Hip Hop Pioneer Kool Herc In Need Of Surgery, But No Health Insurance

DJ Kool Herc

We live in one of the superpowers of the world! ‘Give me your tired, your poor … ‘ and then you don’t take care of them? There should be no weak ants in the colony. There shouldn’t be anyone fighting for health care! This has been going on too damn long! -DJ Kool Herc, statement to MTV News on February 1

DJ Kool Herc, The Father Of Hip Hop, is in financial straits now due to his lack of medical insurance and need for surgery.

Herc is suffering from “serious kidney stones” according to his family and while kidney stones are painful, they aren’t uncommon and they are treatable. Unfortunately, what is common is the medical debt and strain of the uninsured. Herc’s hospital bills total more than $10,000, but he is also in need of surgery on top of that.

$10,000 is also not a lot of money…if you have it, but like many of us Herc doesn’t have it. Online fund-raising has already begun as the Hip Hop community rallies to help support the legend in his time of need.

A similar problem has befallen late producer J Dilla’s father, Beverly “Pop Dukes” Dewitt Yancy, who is also in need of help with his medical bills. The 55 year old Herc, born Clive Campbell, wants to use his situation to highlight the need for universal health care in the US. He also had this to say:

We fought for 1520 Sedgwick to get landmark status, and in 2007, New York State officially recognized it as the ‘Birthplace of Hip Hop.’ Now we are fighting for health care not just for me, but for everyone. I see this situation as another quest for me to shine light on a sensitive issue for the community. I’m an instrument of God. I’m here for a purpose and I want to be here for the solution.”

A host of hip-hop luminaries came out Tuesday night to help raise money for ailing rap legend Kool Herc, who was recently hospitalized and cannot afford to cover his medical bills.

A recent benefit party for Herc drew producer Just Blaze, rapper Black Rob and deejay Tony Touch. They raised about $1,000 for Herc, and Sutra Lounge in New York City, which hosted the party, will continue to accept donations for him through the rest of the month.
