This is what we do. Our lives are dedicated to pigeons, even when I have been fighting or getting locked up. This is not no hobby. This is something we are going to do until the day we die.” -Mike Tyson
In March heavyweight boxing champ Mike Tyson will have his own docudrama series on Animal Planet that focuses on his passion for pigeons.
The 6 part series is currently called “Taking On Tyson” and will show undisputed world boxing champion “Iron Mike” entering the fiercely competitive world of pigeon racing as a novice and an underdog.
Viewers will get to see Tyson return to the Brooklyn neighborhood grew up in. His pigeon coop is now a tall building right next to the gym where he used to train.
There are things about my life. I had a pretty colorful past…We go to some places in the past which are a pretty dark place for me. -Mike Tyson
During the show Tyson recalls skipping school to escape bullies, taking solace in raising pigeons and he even says the first fight he ever got into as a child was in defense of his birds.
It’s great that people get to see this side of Mike Tyson and what he represents as a Black person, a man, an athlete, a champion, a formerly incarcerated person and a person from the hood. None of those groups are known as animal lovers and I think it’s important for people to see this exists.
“Taking On Tyson” debuts March 6 at 10 PM e/p on Animal Planet. watch the trailer below.
