Cancun Climate Change Conference
on December 6th, 2010 at 12:33 pmA place associated with Spring Break and tequilla drenched vacations is hosting the latest international Climate Change Summit.
A big deal was made of the summit in Copenhagen and yet for the same type of summit at this crucial juncture in history little to no TV news coverage has been given to the summit in Cancun, Mexico. In fact Amy Goodman, currently chasing down stories and asking truthful questions to power noted after reviewing their transcripts no coverage has been given to the Cancun summit on NBC, CBS or ABC all last week on the nightly news of those stations.
Instead we are consumed with bickering over WikiLeaks cables and centering our attention on the Julian Assange saga as if it’s the only thing happening in the news. More on that later.
Here’s one segment of today’s DemocracyNow!’s excellent coverage where Goodman interviewed Claudia Salerno, Venuzuela’s lead climate change negotiator, about the current threat the Kyoto Protocal is under. The Kyoto Protocal is the only treaty that binds almost 40 rich nations to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 2012. Last week Japan said it would oppose extending the protocol if the US and China did not sign on also. In fact the US has never ratified Kyoto despite being the world’s largest polluter.
The DN! Team will be reporting live from Cancun all week.
