Revolution, Is There An App For That?
on November 16th, 2010 at 2:01 pmOk, no there isn’t an app for revolution and whether or not the revolution will be televised at this point is really the least of our problems. I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about revolution lately so of course this post “As the Country Falls Apart, It’s Time for Our Revolution” via alternet.org popped into my life. The post is actually an excerpt from Ted Rall’s new book “Anti-American Manifesto.” The book is “a call to arms” in these, the last days of the American empire.
Have you noticed the empire’s falling? Our environmental issues are but one of many canaries in the mine. There’s the state of journalism today, an overextended military, trade imbalances and the list goes on and on. In the excerpt Rall offers a bleak vision of what’s coming, a Mad max scenario where right wing, nativist, Timothy McVeigh type nuts are the ones who are prepared, armed and in charge.
One of things that concerns me here is the state of preparedness of Black people, young people and young Black people. Black people talk about revolution more than any other group I know of, but are we prepared for it? What have we done with those ideas?
Do young people want an app for everything? Can we even understand in time the folly of revolution via superphone?
And young Black people, with our ideas about first Black presidents and first Black everything elses, will we grasp the idea that pushing to integrate a crumbling system isn’t where our energies need to be?
Ted Rall doesn’t mention these groups in particular in that alternet.org post but he does offer some solutions, sort of. So what do you think the answers are? Are we prepared for the end of this empire? Do you believe America is ending? Why or why not?
