In Oct of 1990 two friends, Stretch Armstrong and Bobbito Garcia, started a radio show that revolutionized how we look at Hip Hop programing…
[T]he program introduced NY and the world to Wu-Tang, Nas, Jay-Z, Big L, Fat Joe and more…
Since 2003, The Squeeze Radio show has introduced NY and many listeners in the world to Kanye West, Consequence, Lupe Fiasco, Blu, Roc Marciano, Torae, Tanya Morgan and more.
I ask for your help…We are running out of time. ~Sucio Smash, current host of Squeeze Radio
We at sofreshandsogreen.com want to help save polar bears and Squeeze Radio, the award winning Hip Hop radio show on WKCR 89.9 FM in New York City (and around the world) that’s been on for nearly 20 years.
Columbia University will cancel the Squeeze Radio show on its 20th anniversary, and in doing so will destroy a piece of history and Real Hip-Hop in New York. Now that Fat Beats, a world-renowned hip-hop record shop specializing in vinyl releases, is closed New York City is running out of these historic Hip Hop institutions. These institutions provided outlets for new artists to breakthrough and opportunities for supporters of Hip Hop to participate in this culture beyond treating it as a mere commodity to be consumed along with everything else that’s for sale these days.
I sometimes put up mixes from 99.5 WBAI’s Underground Railroad hosted by Jay Smooth. It’s the longest running Hip Hop radio show and I’m eternally grateful for the opportunity to support that show and be a part of its community.
I’m not sure what I’d do if Underground Railroad were canceled. I can safely say it has changed my life and even helped bring this site into existence. What’s at risk is also that same opportunity for others to take the creative sparks Squeeze Radio offers then build more sparks with them. Both shows consider themselves part of a community and DJs like friend to the blog DJ C-Reality spin on Underground Railroad and Squeeze Radio.
The fact is our environment includes Hip Hop and Squeeze Radio, not actual polar bears so we hope you get behind this effort.
If you consider the Hip Hop you love “Real Hip Hop”, if you’re a purist, if you think rap music needs balance, if you’re sick of that fake thug, R & B Rap scenario all day on the radio, if you used to love H.E.R. too please sign this petition…I did.
