A recent survey showed atheists/nonbelievers know more about religion than the faithful. I wasn’t surprised cause many know more about their religion than anyone else’s. Not that I agree with that, but sadly the study found many Americans don’t even know about their own religions.
A majority of Protestants, for instance, couldn’t identify Martin Luther as the driving force behind the Protestant Reformation according to the survey…” ~latimes.com
C
atholics lacked knowledge of Catholicism too.
Questions about Buddhism, Hinduism and Islam were also on the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life survey, which I took part of online.
I have 2 issues with these findings: Firstly, If you don’t know your own religion maybe you missed the parts that have to do with love and not fear. Second: Knowledge of other religions, if not your own if you have one, falls under knowledge of history and global studies. A lack of one shows a lack of the others. Third, this shows a lack of knowledge between one’s religion and others. Religions don’t exist in a bubble.
Hopefully atheists won’t get such a bad rap now and we’ll start to see the links between not knowing about others’ religions, mosque building, Non Muslim presidents and intolerance.
I got 93% correct on the survey, but I’ve studied these things. Try it yourself U.S. Religious Knowledge Survey
