The White Roof Project’s infographic explains cities are full of heat trapping black surfaces, like black pavement and tar roofs raising city temperatures up to 22 degrees Fahrenheit hotter than nearby suburbs.
The “Urban Heat Island”, as it’s called, increases energy use, stress on the power grid, increased pollution while making cities incredibly, even dangerously, hot even at night.
