Is Goat Meat The New Beef?
on September 28th, 2010 at 12:23 pmWell, the short answer is no and you can’t call it a comeback cause goats have been around for years. 400 years in North America to be exact according to a recent post at good.is.
In the article it seems American meat eaters have discovered (as this country is fond of doing) goat meat, while most of the world and certain ethnic enclaves in the US have been eating goat more than any other red meat. The heavy-hearted and well informed are turning away from beef, due to horrific industry practices like feedlots and pathogen outbreaks, Hoof-In-Mouth disease and recalls.
Apparently goats are in vogue now, despite their false reputation for eating garbage. Now they’re being viewed as “sustainable” because they are natural lawnmowers now “hired” by cities and raised by smaller, more ethical urban farmers. They’re also harder to raise in feedlots or cloistered environs like cows or chickens.
Though I’d hate for cows to be maligned in favor of goats. Certainly how they’re raised is not their fault and a cow, raised by an ethical farmer and gets to be a cow in all her full on “cowiness”, will also eat grass.
