The soft spoken Somali-Canadian rapper K’naan was interviewed on PBS’ Need To Know where he told the story of his traumatic departure from Somalia to world fame at the World Cup and a #1 hit in 16 countries with “Wavin’ Flag”.
He doesn’t mention it here but K’naan’s grandfather, Haji Mohammad, was a poet and his aunt, Magool, was one of Somalia’s most famous singers.
His flight from his homeland is the kind that creative intellectuals and their families can make from the chaos of the times in their countries. As he should, he tells his story, he tells the stories of his people, he tells the stories with his art. What more could you ask for from an artist? Cool hair? He’s got that too.
He’s on tour. Check the dates at hiphopdx.com
