While I was there I saw both devastation and rebuilding efforts.

I also broke bread with people who had lost their entire family.

Literally, everyone but them was deceased.

Then there were those whose grief centered around losing a mother, father, brother, sister, son, or daughter as a direct result of what happened.

It should make everyone reading this feel blessed to have anyone in his or her life.

Think about that… Now think about it some more. ~Immortal Technique, “Observations of Haiti (Letter)”

Today marks the 6 month anniversary of the 7.0 magnitude earthquake that rocked Haiti on January 12th, 2010. I didn’t realize we were celebrating “anniversaries” like this only 6 months later but, here we are.

I recently read an article about a trip to Haiti from an author who made some very astute observations. He’s a passionate and bright man named Immortal Technique. I personally want to say props to allhiphop.com for running the piece.

It’s lengthy, engaging, political commentary placed in a historical context is exactly the type of piece that many Hip Hop websites wouldn’t run for fear of chasing off their supposedly extremely sensitive, ADHD ridden, apolitical “readers”. Maybe there is someone like that coming to sites like this and mine but that certainly isn’t everyone. It’s important to stop talking down to folk and get down to educating and informing sometimes.

In “Observations of Haiti (Letter)” Immortal Tech addresses the orphans, the numerous aggressive Christian missionaries, what happens to your charitable donations, Wyclef’s Yele, the anemic mission of the UN, the lingering spirit of the revolutionary history of the people, and the Foreign Aid field that he says is “infested with corporate socialites and poverty pimps.”

As a person of Haitian decent I’m always touched by how much people who aren’t Haitian show love.
