It’s easy to not care or even understand the magnitude of an event when a disaster isn’t in your backyard, but ecocide on this scale is dramatically life changing. As a visual exercise a website was created to help you see what this oil disaster would look like if it happened in your backyard.

I tried it. It tracks your general location and plops that oil right on top of you in a very unsexy way. Here in New York I admit I was a bit surprised to see how much of it spreads to cover the Tri State area.

It also gives you the option of putting the spill back in the Gulf with the click of your mouse which is kind of sad if you think about it, but it’s a cool exercise. Try it at ifitwasmyhome.com
