As the famous song goes “You’re nobody till somebody loves you”, but apparently you’re nobody till you have this video on your blog. That makes me a little late but I wanted to share some thoughts on it too.
After hours of listening to Ms. Badu’s new album by the time I got to see the video perhaps I was all Badu’ed out. By boy Gedi of potholesinmyblog.com wanted to get my thoughts on it and I said I wasn’t that impressed, but he was so I watched it again to see what I may have missed.
I’m pretty used to performance art and while it was a statement I wouldn’t have been brave enough to make in the buff I didn’t see it as such a big deal.
Upon second watch I noticed again I’ve seen Erykah Badu live (great performer live) and I thought she was more toned last year. For me although she looks great and is doing a great commercial for the vegan diet which I covered HERE, the fact that she wasn’t as toned made me feel like she wasn’t doing this as a vanity project.
The more I think about it the more inspirational her statement became to me. It is provocative in the best sense of the word and people are really talking about heavy themes like groupthink and individuality now. Even more impressive it was shot guerrilla style in 2 minutes without a single airplane window seat to be found anywhere in this video!
Disclaimer: Not safe to watch at work or with kids.
UPDATE: Free download of Erykah Badu’s “Window Seat” HERE
You can check out the coverage at potholesinmyblog.com for more helpful details on how this video was made, what it means and a clearer vision of the statement she made.
Here’s what she had to say about it yesterday on twitter. There’s even a quote from Jay Electronica included.
Her new album New Amerykah Part II: Return of the Ankh drops next Tuesday.

She is using her nakedness to draw attention to a point she is trying to make. Our society is still running with old Puritanical beliefs about sex and nudity so some can only see that this woman is naked. It’s not like you can see the naughty bits and if that’s all you’re focused on I really don’t know what to say. Unlike Lada GaGa who seems to push the envelope for artistic freedom alone Erykah has not been known for flashing a lot of skin.
“naughty bits” lol I love that! You’re right Erykah isn’t know for flashing a lot of skin which does make this that much more of a statement. I wish more female artists would catch on. If you’re always naked there’s nowhere to go, no statement, and no one would care if you tried to make a statement like that naked. In art there is a difference between naked and nude. Nude means she knows we know she’s not wearing clothes. It’s about a relationship to the viewer and about shame or lack thereof.
