Hey, I’ll be the first to admit I don’t know New York rapper Donny Goines’ entire catalog, but I think I heard part of a Peter Rosenburg interview with him while I was sort of awake and I have heard “She Likes” featuring Che Grand & Izza Kizza in its entirety. I also have my own blog which makes me an expert! I’ll tell you what else I do know, this song is hot in the conventional, summertime windows open in your ride singing “she likes/ she drinks coffee/ she likes/ she drinks tea/ she likes” at a red light type of way. This song does not make me think we’re approaching a new Golden Era of Hip Hop or anything nor does it make me feel the sense of “last days” that maybe a Soulja Boy can give. It does make me think this song if given a chance could open the door to more interest in Donny Goines.
While Drake bakes cakes in the sunshine of corporate adoration, buzz and airplay, Donny Goines “has been relentless in the pursuit of his dreams” whatever that means. Is it me or is everybody saying that they’re doing that these days?
Anyway that’s not Donny’s fault. What probably is Donny’s fault is Donny saying things like this: “If you don’t know my name, I’m not working hard enough”, which I like.
Then following it up with things like this: “Inspired by the movie “Fade to Black” he decided to become a serious Hip Hop artist and hasn’t looked back since” ~myspace bio, which I don’t like.
I don’t know about you but it’s a tough call for me. Luckily for Donny he is not without charm, a hot beat courtesy of Apple Juice Kid, cameos (video and song) and a catchy hook.
Donny also gives away free things like his sophomore album, The Breakfast Club.
FUN FACT: Donny was in the United States Navy for 3 years before leaving to pursue music.
