Treehugger.com recently posted and article about a study done by a Chicago based nonprofit organization called The CNT that shows people who live in cites emit less carbon from transit than their suburban counterparts. 70% less to be exact based on emissions data across the country compiled by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. It makes sense because cities tend to have public transportation systems which cut down on the need for individuals to have cars. In cities necessities and workplaces are more likely to be closer to the home also. There would be less traffic if you could walk or bike to work.
In many cases living in ways that are better for the environment are cheaper too. While transportation costs in cities it costs less than in the suburbs. “People who live in cities typically spend around 14% of their income on transportation, while those who live in suburban areas spend up to 28% or more on transportation.” Next time you find yourself on the train or bus with dozens or hundreds of your fellow city dwellers don’t curse them under your breath, thank them for doing their part.
