President Barack Obama, right, receives grilling tips from Chef Bobby Flay on the South Lawn of the White House, Friday, June 19, 2009, in Washington during an event in conjunction with fatherhood and mentoring.

Barack Hussein Obama was sworn in as the 44th president of the United States at the age of 47, making him one of our nation’s youngest presidents. Not only is our president young, he is youthful and seemingly very healthy. There is almost too much information about the most mundane parts of his day and but I was still kind of surprised when I saw this.

“White House Unbuttons Formal Dress Code” in the NYTimes. Fashion buff that I am I had to read it. In this article though, Mr. Obama’s work and health habits were also uncovered. “Mr. Obama likes to have his workout — weights and cardio — first thing in the morning, at 6:45.”

That takes some discipline. It also puts Pres. Obama out of step with many of his fellow Americans. Data from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System in 2007 analyzed obesity prevalence among adults, by state, from self-reported weight and height.
Among 2007 BRFSS respondents:

* 25.6% were obese.
* 26.4% of men and 24.8% of women were obese.
* The obesity prevalence ranged from 19.1% for men and women aged 18–29 years to 31.7% and 30.2%, respectively, for men and women aged 50–59 years.
* By race/ethnicity and sex the obesity prevalence was highest for non-Hispanic black women (39.0%) followed by non-Hispanic black men (32.1%).
* The obesity prevalence was higher in the South (27.3%) and Midwest (26.5%) and lower in the Northeast (24.4%) and West (23.1%).

Pres. Obama’s harsh tone towards Black fathers on Fathers Day in a Chicago church suggests he’s not above telling you what he thinks is good for you. It almost feels like in the middle of some speech he’s going to tell us we’re fat. It’s no secret that while Pres. Obama is a basketball fan he also makes time to play ball with some regularity.

After his workout “he reads several papers, eats breakfast with his family and helps pack his daughters… off to school before making the 30-second commute downstairs.” Well, there is a correlation between stress, weight gain and many other poor health symptoms. “‘Even as he is sober about these challenges, I have never seen him happier,’ Mr. Obama’s senior adviser David Axelrod said. “The chance to be under the same roof with his kids, essentially to live over the store, to be able to see them whenever he wants, to wake up with them, have breakfast and dinner with them — that has made him a very happy man.” Given First Lady Michelle Obama’s commitment to healthy food dinner with the family is most likely a nutritious de stressor for a president with a lot on his plate- so to speak.

If I had to guess I’d say Michelle Obama thinks we’re fat too. She is said to work out for 90 minutes 3 times a week. When asked about being nervous before delivering her powerful speech at the Democratic National Convention in August 2008 the notoriously bare armed first lady said she was an athlete and was used to the pressure. Take that lazy Americans! We can use the first family as role models in more ways than one and it seems like they really want us to.
